What is the correct height to hang a pendant over a dining table or kitchen island?

Guidelines for ideal pendant light placement over tables and islands.

Dining Table- A pendant's hanging height is determined by the ceiling height. In general, pendant lights should be hung 24 to 36 inches above the surface of an 8-foot ceiling. A pendant set higher than 36 inches may not produce the more focused glow. You may want to consider a linear suspension or chandelier instead.

A lower mount is also not ideal for pendant lighting. This is because the hanging lights may reach eye-level for some guests, creating an unsightly glare or a potential piece to bump heads into. By keeping the fixture between 24 and 36 inches high, it allows the room to feel cozy and well-lit while keeping it out of the way of traffic. To achieve a cozy feel with a smaller table, consider a dome pendant. This will draw the focus downward while providing an inviting touch to the surface.

Kitchen Island- The size of the kitchen island determines how many and what kind of pendants can be hung above it. It is generally recommended to hang kitchen island pendants between 24 and 36 inches above the surface and at least 24 inches apart, regardless of their size.

Design and size of the pendants will depend on the width and length of the island, as well as the style of the surrounding kitchen. You can provide ample illumination while remaining minimal by arranging mini pendants. Kitchen island pendants have many options, so proper research into the size, style and mood desired is necessary.
