How can I get my rug to lay flat?

Tips for flattening rugs using reverse rolling, sunlight, or professional steaming.

One of the easiest ways to deal with a rug that refuses to lay flat, is to reverse roll it along the diagonal. Allow the rug to rest this way for 1-2 days so the fibers unbuckle and relax. Additionally, the reverse rolled rug can be placed outdoors under the sun for a few hours which will help speed up the process. The heat from the sun helps the rug naturally release tension.

Another common resolution is to have the rug steamed; however, this is not applicable to all rugs. The material coupled with construction type can cause varying effects from this method. This should be done by a third-party professional. Communication Tip:

When guiding customers through flattening a rug, keep your tone reassuring and proactive—make it sound easy, safe, and achievable.

Example approach:

  1. Acknowledge the concern:
“It’s common for new rugs to have a bit of curl or wave after shipping, but there’s an easy fix.”

  2. Share the go-to method:
“One of the best ways is to gently reverse-roll the rug along the diagonal and leave it that way for 1–2 days. If possible, place it in the sun for a few hours—the warmth helps the fibers relax faster.”

  3. Address steam cleaning carefully:
“Some customers choose to have their rug steamed, but because results vary by material and construction, we recommend using a professional. Please note, any damage from steam treatment isn’t covered under warranty.”

Pro Tip:
Always lead with the simple, at-home method first, then present professional options as secondary. This gives customers a safe DIY solution while still offering alternatives if needed.
