Guidelines for Cleaning, Vacuuming, and Maintaining Different Rug Fibers

Rugs require specific cleaning methods depending on their fiber type and construction. This guide provides care instructions for common rug fibers, vacuuming best practices, and rug pad recommendations to ensure long-lasting beauty and durability.

By Fiber Type

Acrylic: Blot spills, then clean with diluted detergent/vinegar solution; wipe with and against pile.

Polypropylene & Polyester: Naturally stain-resistant; follow wool cleaning methods.

Sisal: Blot or scrape solids; stains are harder to remove; professional cleaning may be required.

Viscose/Rayon: Avoid high traffic/moisture; blot spills immediately; gently wipe in both directions; best cleaned before stains dry; consider professional cleaning.

Cotton: Small rugs may be machine-washable; larger rugs require dry-cleaning powder.

Wool: Blot spills; clean with diluted detergent/vinegar solution; wipe in both directions, then dry.

Jute: Not water-resistant; blot stains immediately; professional cleaning may be necessary.

Vacuuming:
- Regular pile: vacuum weekly; shedding is normal initially.
- Shag: shake outdoors.
- Loop/Braided: remove/disable beater bar or use highest setting.

Rug Pads:
- Dual Grip Felted: Best quality; prevents shifting, adds cushion/insulation.
- Cushion Grip: Thick; adds cushion, prevents shifting, easily trimmed.
- Premium Grip: Waffle texture; improves air circulation and vacuuming.
