What are the main types of synthetic rug fibers and their benefits?

An overview of polyester, polypropylene, and rayon/viscose rug fibers and their key benefits.

Rugs made with synthetic fibers are often more affordable than natural fibers while being exceptionally durable. They're also some of the softest rugs you can buy.

Polyester and Polypropylene: Polyester and synthetic blends are made for performance and value. Polyester and polypropylene are our picks for durability and stain resistance—with polypropylene having the added benefit of water-wicking qualities—both creating a smooth feel underfoot.

Rayon and Viscose - Derived from cellulose found in natural materials, rayon and viscose are semi-synthetic, shiny fibers and are often used as a more affordable substitute for silk. Some rugs are made of 100% rayon or viscose, but it’s more commonly used as an accent fiber.
