Can you tell me about overall rug care?
Guidelines for cleaning, vacuuming, and maintaining your rug.
Rugs require specific cleaning methods depending on their fiber content and construction. This guide provides care instructions for common rug fibers, vacuuming best practices, and rug-pad recommendations to ensure long-lasting beauty and durability.
Care by fiber type:
Acrylic: Blot spills, then clean with a diluted detergent/vinegar solution (1:10 detergent to water, with a splash of vinegar); wipe the spot with and against pile, then dry.
Polypropylene & Polyester: Though these materials are naturally stain-resistant, you can follow wool cleaning methods. Blot the spill then clean with a diluted detergent/vinegar solution (1:10 detergent to water, with a splash of vinegar); wipe in with and against the pile, then dry.
Sisal: Blot or scrape solids; stains are harder to remove on sisal; professional cleaning may be required.
Viscose/Rayon: Blot spills immediately. Best cleaned before stains dry, using a cleaning solution (1:10 detergent to water, with a splash of vinegar). Consider professional cleaning if the stain is not lifting.
Cotton: Small rugs may be machine-washable; larger rugs require dry-cleaning powder.
Wool: Blot spills. Clean using a diluted detergent/vinegar solution (1:10 detergent to water, with a splash of vinegar). Wipe with and against the pile, then blot dry.
Jute: Not water-resistant; blot stains immediately; professional cleaning may be necessary.
Vacuuming:
- Regular pile: Vacuum weekly—shedding is normal initially and will lessen with time and proper care.
- Shag: Shake outdoors.
- Loop/Braided: Remove or disable beater bar and use the highest setting.
Rug Pads:
- Dual Grip Felted: Our highest-quality rug pad. It prevents shifting, while adding cushion and insulation underfoot.
- Cushion Grip: Thick; adds cushion, prevents shifting, easily trimmed.
- Premium Grip: Waffle texture; improves air circulation and vacuuming.
